-- "CONTEXT-SENSITIVE" HELP
The Nifty Help system is capable of reading a word from the screen and
zipping directly to the appropriate help file whenever you press the "hot key".
When the "hot key" is pressed to invoke Nifty, the program will locate the cur-
sor on the screen and read the nearest word. If there happens to be a help
file whose name -- NOT including the extension (eg: ".HLP") -- is the same as
the word picked up from the screen, Nifty will zip right to that file without
first displaying the primary help menu (found in the HELP.MNU file, remember?).
In order to tell Nifty to bypass the primary help menu in this case, you must
place into HELP.MNU an instruction line that contains only an "=" sign and a
file name. Example:
A=AARDVARK.HLP
=COMPUTER.HLP
The first line tells Nifty to display the AARDVARK file whenever the A key is
pressed at the primary help menu. The second line instructs the program to by-
pass the primary menu and immediately display a help file named "COMPUTER.HLP"
whenever the hot key is pressed while the cursor is located beneath (or just to
the right of) the word "computer". Note that, since DOS limits file names to
eight characters, only the first eight characters of the scanned word will be
used by Nifty. Hence, the "COMPUTER.HLP" file would be displayed if the hot
key were pressed while the cursor is beneath any of the following words: com-
puter, computers, computerization, etc. You'll find that this theoretical lim-
itation rarely, if ever, affects what you will want to do with the program.
NOTE:
COMPUTER.HLP is included among the example files provided with
Nifty. To try it out, get to the DOS prompt, type "COMPUTER" and
then hit ALT-N. Of course, you must have previously loaded the
Nifty Help system.
